Q&A

This Questionaire is from BANDA Songhits magazine:

How was the experience being part of “Kami nAPO muna ulit” CD? It felt very good for sure.

Yes, of course. We are very big APO fans! It’s great to have another opportunity to cover one of their great songs.

Heard that CD is certified Gold already after one week it was released. Congrats! Got any expectations on the newly-released CD? Or message for everyone about the album, at least? :-)

Thanks! Personally, I don’t have any expectations from the album, but it’s really great that people still dig the APO songs. I think that this album is a little more “artsy” than Kami nAPO Muna. The 1st one was an all-hits album. This one features some of the lesser known hits of the APO. All of their songs are very good, so even the non-singles should be heard be a newer audience.

You covered the song “Princesa”. How was it? (And) Personally, what's your feel about the song?

I really like it. It’s a song about dancing, so we gave it a disco-ish groove. It’s also nice that we used the kazoo again, after using it first in Happy Birthday.

Aside from “Princesa”, what other APO songs are your favorites?

A lot!!! When I Met You is probably my favorite APO song. Awit Ng Barkada, Batang Bata Ka Pa, Pumapatak Ang Ulan, Kabilugan Ng Buwan, Anna, Yakap Sa Dilim, and Kumot At Unan are some of the favorites I can think of right now.

What do you think of today's music scene? Personally, do you think that bands are on its way out?

As long as there are kids who like rock n roll, there will always be bands. 2006 gave us a lot of very good bands. As compared to the 90’s band explosion, there are a lot more good bands these days.

What are your favorite records of the last 10 years? And how about your own stuff? Which song are you most proud of? Why?

I usually like the classics more, but there are a lot of newer stuff that I like. Razorlight, Muse, Alicia Keys, Arctic Monkeys, Chris Cornell, Sugar Free, Ciudad, Belle & Sebastian, Bloc Party, Blur, Chillitees, Sound, Coldplay, Cynthia Alexander, The Darkness,  Deathcab For Cutie, Dicta License, Urbandub, Kjwan, Sandwich, Pupil, Dong Abay, Ephemera, Flaming Lips, Weezer, Hilera, P.O.T., Popsicle, U2, etc etc….

I’m sorry I didn’t answer the question, but I really like a lot of stuff.

I’m proud of all of our songs! I’m proud of Noon Time Show J

What do people misunderstand about you?

I tell it as it is, I usually don’t sugar-coat.

In what way has the business of being a rock band changed most for you?

I became a guitar addict. I started collecting guitars a couple of years ago. I now have around 30 guitars.

Well, how famous did (do) you expect to be?

I wished to be famous enough to not work in a corporate job. Apparently, I got my wish.

Some people say you've had an ideal career. Do you agree and do you think that's true? Why and why not?!

I agree. I wouldn’t have it any other way. I would like to think that you can’t put a good band with good songs down. We are very lucky to have achieved this.

What do you do when not performing or recording?

Well, I still visit my business with Kelvin, SoftSpot. We manufacture toys, bags, pillows and other corporate giveaways. You can visit our website at www.softspotinc.com

How would you like to be remembered?

As a good person who tried to make a lot of people happy J

What are your biggest career regrets?

I don’t believe in regrets. Everything happens for a reason.

        What's been your biggest thrill?

Touring around the Philippines with my friends, and meeting a whole lot of people along the way.

Outside of your career, are you really happy? You seem a very happy-go-lucky individual.:-)

Yes. I am more than content with my life right now. The key is to not expect anything!

Where do you think you'll be in 10 years' time? (And) What do you think you'll be doing by then (2017)?

Still making music with my friends. If not professionally, at least for our own amusement!

Finally, is there a new Itchyworms album in the works now?

Yes! We’re working on our new materials. We don’t want to rush it. We want to make it really good. J

One Is The Loneliest Number

One Is The Loneliest Number
by JUGS

I woke up to the sound of lightning striking a large boulder, or so I thought… It was more like a big bulldozer, plowing through our street, like a carabao in a rice field. I was given only a few hours to bring out my car from our garage, because they were about to dig up our whole block.

I panicked, because if knew they were going to dig up my street sooner or later, but I never thought they'd do it this abruptly! I quickly called my newly-wed bandmate, Chino. He had this empty condo unit whose rent has already been paid for until the end of July. He and his wife moved to a bigger apartment; and a few weeks back, he offered the place to anyone who was willing… so I took it!

It was like destiny or something, because in a matter of minutes, I was packed, and ready to go to my new studio-type unit. For the first time in my life, I was going to live alone.

Ho-hum…This living alone business was kind of overrated.

It was weird waking up in the afternoon…in Makati!

The first "morning" was weird. I wore my standard black shirt, baggy cargo shorts, and crocs, and went out to get something to eat. Everyone was wearing office clothes except for me! Then I went to the nearby Starbucks and said in straight English, "Good morning, can I have a tall orange juice and a chicken teriyaki sandwich please?"

The kind barista replied, "Sir, Good afternoon na po!"

A few days after, I bought a Japanese surplus 14" inch Sony TV and a generic DVD player from the Pier. My TV at home was too big and heavy to carry, and I needed something to keep me sane. I also borrowed my girlfriend's radio.

During my one month's stay there, I was able to watch the 6th season of 24, as well as Rambo 1 to 3, and Lethal Weapon 1 to 4, and other nostalgic DVDs. I also read Neil Gaiman's Sandman Books 1 to 7 and other graphic novels. I think I was also able to drink around fifty 1-liter bottles of C2 Green Tea and 5 fresh milk cartons.

That's what you do if you don't have a pc and internet access. (I used my Motorola ROKR to surf!)

It was nice to have a 24-hour Jollibee in walking distance, but usually their staff were already grumpy by 1am. The money I saved on gas expense was used for food. And there was plenty of food… plenty and expensive. I missed my Mom's home cooking.

I cleaned my small space using folded tissue paper, because I didn't have a broom. Later, I bought cheap pranelas on the street (4 pcs for five pesos) to conserve my tissue consumption. I had to clean my room every day, because the aircon kept on spewing large amounts of dust and lint. I think it needed cleaning, but I didn't dare touching it.

I went home to QC at least once a week to have my dirty laundry cleaned, and to get new clothes, of course. Every time I'd go home, my Mom would greet me like the Prodigal Son who returned.

Soon, it was time for me to go. The short month was over. Luckily, my street was already cemented. There was still a road block that said DO NOT ENTER, but residents were already allowed to park their cars in their respective garages.

While we were packing, my kumpare Manong Limon, our family driver mused, " Iba talaga ang takbo ng buhay dito sa Makati, noh?"

I agreed, and replied further, "Mabilis ang takbo ng buhay dito."

Soon, we were on our way home, discussing about the traffic there. I said one reason could be the one-way schemes; another could be the meddling Makati Police. He said it was probably because there were a lot of women drivers there, and that they were cautious in driving their beloved SUVs. We laughed all the way back to QC.

It was good to be home.

i hate viva

Nag-shopping ako recently sa M1 sa Greenbelt. Tapos, may nakita akong isang rack doon. Nakasulat:

Listen to them while they were still musical virgins!!!
Featuring: Imago, Radioactive Sago Project, Itchyworms, Mongols, Chicosci, Soapdish, Kamikazee, etc... etc....

It was from Viva fokkin' Records.

It was nice to see our 1st album still in print (and P150 lang!!)... pero noong nakita ko yung rack na yun, naalala ko lahat ng kahirapan na dinaanan namin during THAT time. I am 1000% sure na all the bands mentioned above feel the same way.

Nothing personal, but if you have a band, and Viva's trying to sign you up... For the love of GOD, please do not sign!!! I shit you not. They have ruined a whole lot more careers than those listed above.

Ask the Brownbeat All-Stars... Sugar Free... Ask Domino... heck, ask RIVERMAYA...
They will promise you the moon and the stars... They will even put it on paper. But none of that will matter.

Because in the end, they don't really give a flying fuck about you. Wala silang alam sa mga banda.

Nakiki-uso lang sila. Or maybe, as some might suggest, they're trying to kill the band scene, para mag-flourish yung solo acts nila. Tapos, napaka-poisonous nung working environment nila.

They had a great line up! SHET.

Buti na lang kami, sinuwerte... Ma'am Bella Tan of Universal Records BELIEVED in us. (God bless her soul!).  That's what you need from your record label.

And that's something that Viva Records will never ever understand.

Solitaire

Thought of the day:

"The saddest thing about solitaire

is that no one claps for you

when you win."

Politik!

Nilagay niya doon yung education background niya: GS/HS in whatever.... College (2 years only) in UP Diliman (Mass Comm) ... Graduate school in NYU (3-month course in directing)....

Wow. Tapos tumatakbo siya for SENATOR.

AYUN.

Siguro kailangan hanggang high school level. Ang house maid or yaya?

I suggest, from the President down to the Congressmen, kailangan AT LEAST may PHD sila (ng kahit anong course) and MA in Political Science.

And tingin ko, swak 'to kapag naging Parliamentary Goverment na tayo (KUNG matuloy).

Chiz Escudero/Noynoy Aquino

or

Richard Gomez/Cesar Montano?
